Chapter 3 Interview
'What do I do now, why him? Of all people. Why is life so cruel? Why him!?'
I mentally screamed.
Now, I understood why Lesley was worried. God, that woman should have told me before. As I was cursing her, I knew any moment here was meaningless.
But he was a professional, why would he involve personal grudges in work... right?
And it was his fault, why did he come near in the first place?
He should apologize to me.
"Oh, God, what should I do now?"
Whispering under my breath, I was tense to no extent, I didn't know what to do anymore.
I should leave, there was no place for me anymore. Just the moment I stood up to leave, I was called.
"Miss Garnet Beth. Your turn."
Oh shit.
My eyes widened as my heart skipped a beat. I clutched my file close to my chest as I felt startled.
I grit my teeth and lowered my head. Inhaled deeply, I raised my head with a cold gaze to conceal the distress.
Endure this feeling.
Despite the fact my heart was bursting out of my rib cage I walked inside with a strong aura and bad omens were given to me but I shrugged this off and put up a cold face.
"You can do this, Garnet."
I made a failed attempt to boost my confidence as I knocked and opened the door slightly.
"May I come in, Sir?" I asked hesitantly, bearing the overwhelm in my body.
"Hmm." He hummed as I entered.
Eyes falling upon the tempting man whose very appearance was immaculately sculptured with patience and allure.
I couldn't see his face before due to the lighting in the club but oh, my, God.
"So-"
He was reading a file, he shot up his head with a nonchalant look which couldn't remain for long, his eyes widened for a second to look at me.
Astonishment gleamed in his attractive sapphire eyes, traveling down to scan me from top to bottom with a wicked hint.
"Oh?"
Converting his astonishment into discontent, he raised an eyebrow perfectly.
I remained stoic and walked closer as I put my file on his table and spoke softly.
"Good Morning, Sir."
I took steps back and caught a glimpse of his hard features, gawking at me as I stood there waiting for him to speak.
His eyes are filled with a mixed emotion of bafflement and anger. After a minute he cleared his throat and picked my file to read it.
"I-I am-"
I was about to call my name but he cut me off sternly.
"Garnet Beth." He spoke my name in his commanding voice.
I felt like I was here for military training rather than a PA job interview. It was the golden chance of a lifetime which I stupidly lost.
It would take years to have an interview for such a privileged job.
"Take a seat." He ordered, straightening his shoulders, gesturing to me to sit down.
"Thank you, Sir." I said sincerely, praying he won't mix his personal fury.
Please, I need this job.
"So, you lived in Texas, what brought you here in New York?" He asked, intrigued, looking at the file then at me with a dark look I couldn't ignore.
"Personal Problems." I replied.
"Like?" He questioned with a raised eyebrow.
Elbow inclined on the table as his eyes were affixed on me with a suppressed and questionable smirk which was distressing me.
"If I can tell you, how can it be personal? I am sorry, I cannot tell. Plus, it has no connection with my work or education."
Confirmed. I was not going to get this job.
'How hard it was to say that we shifted orphanages? No, you have to show attitude.'
"I see..."
"Sir, I am-"
"Leave that,"
Resting his right elbow on the armrest of the chair, asserting his dominance.
He threw the file back on the table and stared at me and under that sharp gaze, which looked menacing, how could I relax?
"Give me a reason to hire you, Garnet Beth. You have a two year gap of no specific education or experience."
"I assure you my two years of gap won't affect my present. I have managed the staff at the orphanage, Sir,"
"Are you comparing that to my enormous empire?"
"Certainly not, I am only informing that I can-"
"These diplomas are useless for me, I am not hiring for finance. I need time management and ethics which I doubt you have," He taunted me.
"I know, but, from my education to my skills, all these meet your requirements and as for experience, I know it is not enough but I have years ahead to learn and grow."
I attempted to speak confidently which caused his smirk to grow wider, darker, like all of it was too amusing for him.
'Shut this mouth of yours, you are just here to humiliate yourself!' My mind screamed.
"Well, Ms. Beth, Others here are also eligible, what makes 'you' so special?"
Mockery lingered in his every word.
He won't hire me and was going to gain amusement by ridiculing me. He was toying, I could feel it under my bones.
I inhaled and replied, "I have a diploma in business finance and accounts. And I surely know how to do my job rather than idling around and drooling over my boss."
My eyes widened when I realized what I ended up speaking mindlessly.
'What the hell did I just say?!'
"Come again?"
His jaw clenched because despite his renowned playboy image, he never meddled pleasures with work. He was a man of ethics, everyone knew.
And I... Hit his sensitive spot.
"And you think the girls are coming here just to seduce me?" He growled in a low tone.
"Based upon intentions.'' I replied monotonously, not caring at this point.
I wasn't going to get it anyways.
"And what are your intentions?"
"I need money, I am not interested in other things."
"You have shown it transparently," He muttered another mocked. Pressing my teeth together, I lowered my gaze slightly with disappointment.
This was a chance of a lifetime. I was so excited when the letter for the interview came.
I thought I could finally settle and now all of it was washing away...
My cursed fate.
He noticed the disheartened expression plastered on my face and stood up dominantly.
"Well, Thank you, Ms. Beth, You may leave now"
He buttoned his coat. I also stood up, blinked to clear my vision yet my lips quivered.
I was so discontented. I wasted my chance.
I had always been a disappointment. I failed, again.
"Have a nice day, Sir."
I spoke weakly and took back my file.
'Well done, wasting your time.'
I turned to leave, the moment I held the knob of the door, a hand slammed on the door.
I let out a squeak as my breath hitched, shivering slightly when I sensed his muscular body behind me, hovering that induced a strange sensation.
"S-Sir?"
I quickly took a step back, distressed that pleased him immensely.
He looked at me with a mystifying gaze for startling but surely was amused to see me like this.
Curling those thick lips in a smirk, he rested his one hand in his pocket and opened the door with the other.
He opened the door and motioned me to go out as he spoke in charming yet derisive voice,
"What happened, Ms. Beth? I did literally nothing yet it seems like you can 'slap' me anytime."
I didn't reply and walked out with him following me from behind. I didn't dare to lift my gaze as I felt so timid and scared.
"The interview is done."
He enunciated it to a guy while looking at me intensely.
I clutched my file close to my chest as I nibbled on my bottom lip and left for home.
The moment I reached home, I waited for Lesley to come home. When she entered I burst.
"Why didn't you tell me that it was him!? Did your tongue stop working, huh!? Do you have any idea how awkward it was?! And He is the worst! You could have told me!"
"I told you to search for him." She defended herself.
"You should have told me!" I said frustrated.
"You were so into it so I couldn't bring myself to. Besides, you should give it a try. He is handsome too."
"Shut up! It was nothing but humiliating and a waste of time."
"Oh come on, Garnet, forget about it." She chuckled, waving her hand to shrug it off but I cannot.
God please have some mercy upon me. I need this job badly.
