Chapter 22 The Cabin
The storm had eased to a whisper, but the tension inside the small wooden cabin was deafening. The wind howled through the cracks in the walls, bringing with it the smell of damp earth and a hint of blood. The storm outside had been fierce, but it was nothing compared to the storm raging between them.
Seraphine sat beside the smoldering embers, her back as stiff and taut as the cords of a bow, her golden eyes trained on the fire as if in pursuit of an object, some memory, some future, some answer. Ash sat across from her, silent, and his fingers curled around a cup of cooling coffee, a sip not yet taken.
