Chapter 6 Six
Two years gone by and Leo was still fighting at the frontlines. Alicia was trying her best to stay strong and run the pack but the only problem was that Leo’s letters weren’t coming as often anymore. When he recently went to the frontlines, they exchanged letters every two days but for the past one year, they have only exchanged letters six times. The first time, he had gone two months without sending her a letter and she had grown worried, thinking something had happened after sending series of letters to him which she got no response from. Just as she was getting ready to send someone to the frontline to check on things, his letter came, talking about how sorry he was and how things had gotten tight lately. The king finally sent the reinforcement and he ordered them to be done with the fight as soon as possible so they hardly have them to rest.
With his explanation, her worry dissipated, however, she had to wait another three months to get a letter from him. After reading about his apologies once more, she stopped worrying, believing that he would always send her a letter when he has the chance. The most important thing was that he was okay, as long as he was fine, then there was nothing to worry about.
Alicia sighed and wiped her hands on her face, with the ongoing war, the pack business wasn’t moving so well and if the fight is not taken care of soon, the pack might go low on cash and that would be a very big problem, imagine running a pack with no money, how can they survive? A violent knock on her door made her look up from the paper works she was working on, “come in,” she ushered, wondering who would dare knock so loud on her door.
When the door was opened, she saw the Omega she had assigned to look after her mother. Her mother’s condition had worsened over the years that sometimes she forgets herself and would wander off. With the ongoing war, the last thing she would want would be for her mother to be cut up with it all and find herself where she wasn’t supposed to be. “What is it Stella?” Alicia asked, her worry very clear in her voice as she stood up.
“Luna,” Stella couldn’t find her voice as she kept hiccupping and tears running down her cheeks.
“Stella, tell me what is it?” Alicia demanded.
Stella shivered, although Alicia was not the alpha but one cannot dismiss the fact that as the direct bloodline of the alpha, most times her orders carry command like an alpha’s. “It’s your mother, she is not waking up.”
“What?” Alicia couldn’t believe her ears and in the next second, she was rushing out of her office. As she ran home, she contemplated over taking on her wolf form but she would be limited on things she could do when she eventually gets home. As she ran, she could feel the fear building up in her chest, her mother had attempted suicide twice and she was only able to save her because she discovered on time, what could have happened now?
When she left home this morning, she had gone in to check on her but she was still sleeping so she decided to let her be, it’s only been thirty minutes she left home, and Stella is giving her the news. Then, should she have woken her mother up that morning? Should she have tried to speak with her before leaving the house?
Goddess, please, don’t make me lose my Mom, I will do anything, anything but please let me have her, let her stay with me, she is all I have now. She prayed as she sprinted home.
‘You have me,’ Nala said and Alicia blinked to clear her tear clouded eyes. Finally, she got home, the serving Omegas around greeted her but she didn’t respond to them as she sprinted up the stairs to her mother’s room. She met Doctor Larry already in the room with a warrior wolf, and her eyes went to her motionless mother on the bed.
She stopped, panting as her eyes went to Larry, “what is it?”
Doctor Larry sighed and glanced at the warrior wolf before shaking his head. “It seems she really wanted to go this time.”
“What do you mean?”
Larry signaled to the man and he showed Alicia an emptied bottle of medicine. Alicia recognized the bottle instantly, it was her mother’s anti-depressant, she had taken it upon herself to always feed her mother the required dose every night and last night, she can remember giving her mother the medicine before tucking her to bed. The medicine was always in her room so how did her mother get a hold of it? She never leaves the house until Stella shows up and she made sure to pass the warning that her mother was not allowed in her room. So where did the mistake come from, on whose watch did her mother get her hold on the medicine?
“What is this supposed to mean, Larry, how did my mother have this medicine? I only order a bottle and never orders more unless the one I have is finished, what the hell is going on?” She demanded, her eyes glowing slightly blue as the roots of her white hair started glowing too, a sight every pack member was already used to see whenever the Luna was enraged.
Larry shivered in fear and shook his head. “I have no idea, Luna, either someone helped her purchase one or she happened to get a hold of the one in your room.”
Hearing that, Alica turned and went to her room, she opened the drawer and was shocked to find the medicine in there, just the way she had left it last night, and so that means, someone did get a new one for her mother. She growled angrily and left the room, going up the stairs. “The one I ordered is still in my room, where did this one come from?”
“I don’t know, Luna,” Greg, the warrior wolf answered.
Alicia closed her eyes and sucked in a deep breath to calm herself, finding who got the medicine can be done another time, now, she just have to make sure her mother is okay. “Fine, I will investigate that later, how is she? Have you flushed it out of her system yet?”
This time, Larry stood up and looked at her with sad eyes.
“What is it?” Alicia asked, her heartbeat increased as she could guess what the look in his eyes meant but she refused to believe it.
“Luna, your mother took the overdose since last night.”
“What?”
“I’m sorry, but we already lost her before the morning came.”
