Chapter 3 I Can't Take It Anymore!
Feelings of discontent arose within me alongside surprise. “Carson went on a business trip, with Jolene as her secretary, so it’s normal that you see them together. There’s nothing that you need to feel surprised about.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they were headed to the airport.” Isabella let out a scoff before replying, “But you should check out where they went!” Before I could react, Isabella picked up a stack of documents from the table beside her. “I did an investigation on them, so you should have a look at the results.”
With a look of surprise, I glanced at her before taking the documents from her. Although I was in disbelief, my hands trembled regardless, while my heart was broken as soon as I read through the documents, which shockingly began from four years ago.
The records of the four years that they spent together spanned for as many as ten pages, which I had no knowledge of prior to that moment. I couldn’t believe my eyes, all the while being bombarded by the truth that I didn’t want to confront.
The feelings within me were both complicated and indescribable, as words wouldn’t do justice to my feelings at the moment. I was hit with a sudden realization before asking Isabella, “Does Jolene really have a boyfriend?”
She told me that more time was needed before she could obtain the results. However, judging from the fact that Carson had known Jolene for a long time, as well as Jolene was the one who introduced him to me, she surmised that Carson had had a hidden agenda ever since he began courting me. He might’ve been after the riches that my family possessed all along, as well as thinking of using me as a stepping stone to achieving his own goals, which was a testament to his low self-esteem.
As I listened to Isabella’s analysis of him, my heart was pounding louder than ever. I was the daughter of a notable business owner in Sutvern City, and my family was among the most prestigious families within the city. However, my parents refused to accept Carson as their son-in-law, so I already renounced my ties to them when I married him.
When Carson was setting up his business, he sold his parent’s house, which was a sight that I couldn’t bear to watch, so I shamelessly borrowed five million from my mother in secret to help him out, as well as running around to connect with my father’s friends in order to secure some business for his company. In fact, Carson owed the success of his business to my father’s friends.
The realization that the husband who treated me with utmost care and tenderness was in fact a facade left my brain muddled, while feelings of anger, despair, loss and disbelief mingled within me.
Isabella chided me upon observing how indecisive I was before advising me, “You have to secure your financial status if you are to divorce him!”
Such words of advice only earned her a scoff from me, as I figured that all my wealth would be pointless if Carson didn’t love me. I was thus being regarded as a silly and spoiled girl who didn’t understand the importance of money.
After spending quite some time trying to persuade me but to no avail, she eventually decided to switch tactics. “Lily, if Carson did marry you for the money, he must be someone who values money a lot. Now that he had gotten used to a wealthy lifestyle, if his riches were suddenly gone, his affluent friends would definitely become estranged from him and look down on him, which would definitely break him. Don’t you want to seek revenge against him? Besides, all he has now you were the one to give, yet he would betray you while holding onto all of that. Can you possibly put up with that?”
Her words struck a chord within me, which triggered my need for revenge as I realized that I wouldn’t be able to put up with him any longer.
“You should check on his financial situation to prevent him from transferring them under someone else’s name!” Isabella sounded quite worried, but continued after a moment’s pause, “You should also investigate Jolene, as she couldn’t possibly afford to buy a house and car with her salary. Besides, she was always wearing branded clothes and accessories, but I do not believe for a second that her boyfriend would be rich enough to buy those! Something smells fishy!”
I was so riled up by Isabella’s words that I wound up speechless. At that exact moment, my phone rang with a call from Eliza, so I picked up. “Lilian, something real bad just happened! My father fainted from a heart attack!”
