Maybe Debbie wasn't completely asleep, and it would make sense to wake her before I left, so I moved near, bending over close to her ear and repeatedly saying her name slightly louder each time. There was a slight movement, but her eyes remained closed and her breathing was slow and steady indicating she was in a deep sleep. I put my hand out to touch her shoulder to make sure she was fully asleep, and at that moment I got the scare of my life.
