Chapter 10 Slow-Acting Poison
The corners of Patrick's lips twitched a little. He wanted to retort, but he felt that the more he explained, the worse things might become, so he decided just to swallow the words he was about to say.
The next second, Lilian was already walking up to Wendy with an affectionate look. She then caressed Wendy's head lovingly.
"Child, you must be terrified. Ignore that kid. I'll support you."
The small action reminded Wendy of her grandmother. When she was younger, her grandmother would caress her head as well. The older lady in front of Wendy was just like Wendy's grandmother—encapsulating all the love and warmth the world had to offer.
This was the first person who showed her warmth after she arrived in Woodspine Heights.
In just an instant, Wendy felt her nose turning hot, and her clear eyes shimmered with moisture. She missed her grandmother so much…
"Grandma…" Wendy couldn't help but call out, her eyes turning red.
"Yes?" When Lilian heard Wendy's call, she responded enthusiastically and gave Wendy a wide smile, holding the young lady’s hand while she was at it. Her eyes were filled with love.
However, Wendy suddenly felt her heart sink. Just now, her fingers accidentally touched Lilian's pulse.
Even though Lilian seemed healthy, her pulse was quite unstable. There was probably some blockage in her bloodstream. If this continued, Lilian would be extremely prone to heart attacks. Her life is in danger!
If Wendy guessed correctly, Lilian must have been poisoned, and the poison wasn't easily detected. It must be the work of a slow-acting poison.
"What's the matter?" Lilian immediately noticed something odd about Wendy's expression. "Are you feeling unwell?"
Wendy shook her head, a smile finally returning to her small face. "I'm fine, Grandma."
"Do you take supplements regularly?" she asked in concern of her own accord.
Patrick had been ignored for some time. When he heard that, he couldn't help but glance at Wendy. He never thought that this woman had such a fake and pretentious side to her.
Was she in such a hurry to get on Lilian's good side?
A look of disgust flashed across his dark eyes, and he couldn't hold back his sinister remarks. "You only met her for the first time, but you're already so concerned about her. Huh? Wendy, you're so good at winning people's hearts, aren’t you?"
Hearing the mocking words, Wendy wasn't affected at all. She didn't even spare Patrick a glance as she looked smilingly at Lilian. "Grandma, if you have any supplements you prefer, you can tell me. I'll make them and deliver them to you."
Lilian was even more elated when she heard that. Her wizened hands rubbed Wendy's palm, and when she felt the calluses on the palm, her heart instantly ached for the woman. "Child, you must have gone through a lot of hardship growing up."
"What hardship could she possibly face?" Patrick, who had been ignored, was even more upset now. What talent does Wendy have that she could wrap Lilian around her finger in such a short amount of time?
Unable to stand it any longer, Wendy glanced at the man next to her with disgust written all over her pretty little face. Why is he trying to talk so much? Couldn't he see that no one wanted to humor him?
"What? Was I wrong at all? After all, your lover is so rich that he could purchase something worth 150 million without batting an eye. What hardship could you possibly face?"
Lover? What nonsense is he spouting this time?! Wendy glared viciously at him, then turned and whispered in his ear, "Shut up."
"Who are you telling to shut up?" Patrick frowned in an instant. Does this woman have a death wish? How dare she order me around?
When Lilian saw them like that, her smile turned even wider.
Yes, they were perfect for each other. Her grandson and granddaughter-in-law were a match made in heaven!
"All right, I'm getting tired, so I shall go upstairs to my bedroom. I'll be staying here for a while, and I'm waiting for the day when I'll have a great-grandchild in my arms!" Lilian patted Wendy on the shoulder as she said with a knowing look.
"Go ahead and nurture your relationship."
Lilian's words made Wendy feel a little embarrassed, and her pale ears were immediately tinted light pink.
After escorting Lilian back to her room, Wendy let out a faint sigh.
"Tired from pretending?"
As soon as Wendy came out, Patrick's mocking voice sounded in her ears.
She glanced at him. This man has been blabbering endlessly, so what is he? Some sparrow?
"Instead of being wary of me, you should watch out for people near Grandma. Someone might be trying to harm her," Wendy said.
Patrick sneered, crossing his arms in front of his chest as he gave Wendy an examining look. "As long as you don't harm her, no one else is bold enough to do it!"
Wendy was upset by those words. She gave him a complicated look. She couldn't reason with someone like him, so she decided to just give up trying to convince him.
She turned around and walked down the stairs, not willing to humor him any further.
Patrick stood frozen on the spot, and there was a dark look on his handsome face. If he wasn't mistaken, the woman seemed to have glanced at him with a look of disdain just now. Hah, very well!
