Chapter 26 The Man Behind the Scenes

“You, Miss Courtney Hunter, are sincerely invited to witness the engagement of the bride, Vanessa Garcia, and the groom, Isaac Graham…” The neat, hand-written calligraphy stood out on the piece of paper, and there were animated caricatures of the bride and groom printed inside the letter. Courtney’s face darkened as she held onto the edges of the wedding invitation. Come to think of it, I guess I should have seen this coming when I bumped into them in the elevator that day. I saw that ring—the one that used to hold such a special meaning for me—on Vanessa’s finger, didn’t I? I’m just surprised that they actually sent me an invitation. Courtney slumped onto the couch as her lips curled into a bitter, self-deprecating smirk. She still felt a sore ache in her chest whenever she thought about the incident that occurred five years ago. After all, she wouldn’t have been in today’s state if it weren’t for Isaac and Vanessa. Someone once told her that everyone had to experience falling in love with a douchebag at least once for their lives to be complete. Well, if you include the experience of a best friend backstabbing me as part of the criteria to have lived a meaningful and complete life, I guess my life is as fulfilling as one’s life can ever be. She left the wedding invitation on the coffee table and ignored it for the rest of the day. You wouldn’t sniff the soles of your shoe after stepping on dog poop by accident, would you?
