My eyes were transfixed on the cup in my hands, long cold, bereft of even the hint of steam. There was silence in the kitchen-the hum of the refrigerator the loudest of sounds. It was as if the world had simply stopped since that night, when in fact what was happening now was that the threads were all starting to unwind.
