Chapter 31 Engagement Announcement

"I don't know about this, Jaxon," I whispered, and my heart just drummed within my chest as my palms became clammy again. Moving for what felt like the hundredth time the low neckline of the dress, I wasn't sure if it was the weight of it or heaviness of the situation which made me uncomfortable. Jaxon looked at me from across the room, a small, reassuring smile on his face. He was calm, far too calm for my liking, as he surveyed the crowd gathered at the gala. This was supposed to be a high-profile event, one where we were supposed to make an impact, but I hadn't expected this to be the way we'd do it.
