Chapter 4 Evidence Of Vivian Framing Me
I nodded expressionlessly. "You're right. After all, my mother didn't have Isabella's talent for seducing men. Isabella, not only did you succeed yourself, but you've taught your daughter even better. I really can't compete with that."
"You!" Isabella burst into tears and threw herself into Henry's arms, as if the whole world owed her and her daughter.
"Henry, look at Eleanor. It's fine if she hates me, but why does she hate Vivian? It was Arthur who wanted to call off the engagement with Eleanor. It's not Vivian's fault!"
This outburst of crying reminded Henry of the engagement-calling-off matter.
He suppressed his anger. "That's enough! No need to say more. We called you here today to end the engagement!"
Arthur also came to his senses from his anger and took a deep breath.
"Eleanor, I won't marry an unchaste woman. And I don't want Vivian to get hurt anymore. Hand over the engagement token between our two families to Vivian."
Tears glistened in Vivian's reddened eyes, and her small face was filled with guilt and forbearance.
"Arthur, I know I'm of lowly birth and not worthy of you. Don't make Eleanor sad because of me..."
Arthur looked pained. "Vivian! Even though you're a bastard, you're pure. You're far better than Eleanor in my heart! Don't speak up for her anymore!"
After that, he turned around, annoyed. "Eleanor, call off the engagement! I don't want to say it a second time!"
I sneered. Back then, when I almost bled to death to save Arthur, he promised to love me for a lifetime.
Later, when the doctor said the scar on my neck could never fully heal, Arthur started to dislike it, saying it was ugly, and then got together with Vivian.
Anyone could blame me, but Arthur, who owed me his life, had no right to!
It's so strange. What on earth made me fall for such a scumbag before? Was I drugged or something?
Thinking of this, I nodded calmly. "Fine, I agree to call off the engagement."
"Arthur, please listen to Eleanor's explanation, okay? She just..."
Vivian was still in tears. Half-way through her words, her face suddenly changed. She thought she had misheard and stared at Eleanor in shock. "What did you say?"
"I said, I agree to call off the engagement."
I looked at Vivian and smiled slightly. "So, my dear sister, can you stop your not - so - brilliant act?"
The ward fell silent in an instant.
Vivian's eyes were full of disbelief.
It took Arthur a moment to react. "You agree?"
Everyone knew I loved him. Otherwise, I wouldn't have used my mother's inheritance to help him achieve his current status.
He couldn't believe I would agree to call off the engagement so easily.
Arthur took a deep breath. "It's good that you've come to your senses. Considering our relationship of over ten years, as long as you return the token, I won't say anything more after the engagement is called off. In the future—"
"I agree to call off the engagement, but Arthur."
I interrupted him, smiled faintly, and said firmly:
"But it's not you calling off the engagement with me, it's me calling it off with you!"
The scene fell silent again.
Isabella took three seconds to react before she shrieked, "Eleanor, what did you say!"
If Arthur called off the engagement, it was because they claimed I was promiscuous. But if I called it off, what would the rumors be? Would people say it was Vivian who instigated it?
Vivian's pale little face was covered in tears. "Sister, I know you're wronged, but you don't have to take your anger out on Arthur..."
Arthur roared at me, "What are you fooling around with now?"
I scoffed. "Arthur, you want to call off the engagement because you saw those photos and thought I was unchaste?"
Arthur frowned. "That's the truth. You had relationships with so many men. I can never be with you!"
I nodded, took out my phone from my bag, and clicked on a preprepared video.
Vivian's face froze, and she instinctively tried to stop me —
But it was already too late!
In the video, a man is kneeling on the ground, crying and begging for forgiveness, confessing:
—"It wasn't me. Vivian gave me two hundred thousand to photoshop those pictures. She wanted to ruin Eleanor's reputation. It has nothing to do with me!"
—"Vivian wanted to disrupt the wedding. I just did it for the money. Spare me!"
Then, the man, trembling and in tears, handed over the check Vivian had given him.
Two hundred thousand, neither more nor less. Vivian's name was written clearly and neatly in the bottom-right corner of the check.
Vivian had bribed someone to frame her own sister for having an affair...
The evidence was conclusive!
Everyone inside and outside the ward turned to look at Vivian abruptly. Vivian's tear-streaked face turned deathly pale in an instant!
Isabella and Henry took a step back, their lips quivering.
I asked casually, in a matter-of-fact tone, "I'm unchaste?"
Arthur's body gave a little shudder.
I said coldly, "My dear sister is really crafty. Spending two hundred thousand to smear my reputation and take my place. You two have been playing these tricks for fifteen years. Aren't you sick of it yet?"
Isabella instinctively shouted, "Shut up! You're slandering Vivian..."
I didn't bother to respond and turned to look at Arthur instead.
"And you, as my fiancé, didn't even listen to my explanation. You blamed and insulted me for Vivian's sake. In your eyes, Vivian is hundreds or even thousands of times more important than your fiancée me!"
"You were unfaithful to me, couldn't tell right from wrong and were blind in choosing people. If this engagement is to end, it's me who's ditching you, you good-for-nothing bloke!"
Vivian was as stiff as a board, and even the fake tears were stuck in her eyes, looking extremely awkward.
The way the doctors and nurses around them were looking at the group became rather subtle, and they were indignantly whispering.
"It's obvious that Vivian framed Eleanor. How come none of her family members ever suspected? Are they all brainless?"
"Didn't you hear Eleanor say that Isabella and Vivian have been doing these stunts for fifteen years? God knows how many times they've framed Eleanor!"
"Who said Vivian was innocent and kind? She ruined her sister's wedding, managed to take her place, and smeared her sister's reputation..."
"The daughter of a mistress is still a mistress, it seems. Eleanor is innocent. She didn't have an affair at all."
Outside the door, the curses kept coming. Vivian instinctively shrieked, "Eleanor, I'm your sister! How could you deliberately frame me? My heart hurts so much..."
"Vivian!" Isabella came to her senses and rushed over, crying.
"Eleanor, are you satisfied now that you've hurt Vivian like this? Henry, Vivian's heart isn't well. Why are my daughter and I so unlucky!"
Henry looked at me, shaking with anger. The look on his face, as if he wished I were dead, chilled my heart!
Henry slammed his hand on the table. "That's enough! This matter is not to be mentioned again!"
I was furious. "Not to be mentioned again? I was framed and schemed against by Vivian, losing both my marriage and my reputation. Now that the truth is out, with just one 'let it go' from you, my sister gets to walk away as if nothing happened?"
Henry got even angrier. "So what do you want? Do you want Vivian to kneel down to you? She said it wasn't her. What's the point of you being so petty?"
I calmed down instantly. My father, distorting right and wrong. I definitely couldn't stay in this home any longer.
"So it turns out that I'm the one being petty throughout this whole thing. Isabella and Vivian just shed a few tears and changed from culprits to victims. "
I knew Dad was biased. They'd protect Vivian even if she committed murder. I'm already satisfied that Vivian suffered a big setback today. "Dad, I always get even. Vivian had better give me a satisfactory explanation. Oh, right..."
As if remembering something, she said, "Also, who said no one from the Cavendish family wants me? Arthur, maybe the next time we meet, you'll have to call me auntie. Cherish the time when we're still of the same generation."
After that, Eleanor ignored the foul-mouthed abuse in the ward and walked straight into the elevator.
Ten seconds later, when the elevator door opened, she suddenly heard a surprised voice.
"Edward? You said you're married!"
Eleanor stopped in her tracks and turned to look.
Edward walked out of the ward with his friend Alexander. His expression was unreadable. "Is there any problem?"
Alexander looked exaggerated. "You got married? I don't believe it. Unless you bring your wife here for me to see."
Just then, he suddenly looked up and saw my eyes in the elevator.
His eyes behind the wire-rimmed glasses held a faint smile. "Well, here she is."
Alexander let out a confused "Ah". Then he saw Edward walk up to me. "My wife, Eleanor. Say hello."
