Chapter 8 My Mum's Name On The Necklace
Inside the auction venue, Henry led Vivian around, soaking up the compliments from others and becoming quite complacent.
"Henry, I heard that the highlight of today's auction is the 'Ocean’s Heart' necklace donated by Miss Vivian?"
Henry nodded, feigning a gratified look. "That's right. It was the token of love I gave to Isabella, and Isabella passed it on to Vivian. Vivian is so kind that she's willing to donate it to this charity auction without asking for anything in return."
This statement elicited exclamations from those nearby.
"Good heavens! I've long heard of the 'Ocean’s Heart'. Last time, someone wanted to buy it for 30 million pounds, but Miss Lancaster didn't sell it. I never thought she'd donate it for free this time!"
"Those rumors about her framing her elder sister must be false, right? Vivian is so kind. She surely wouldn't deliberately steal her sister's fiancé."
"Yeah, the fact that she's willing to donate the 'Ocean’s Heart' is enough to show Miss Vivian's character. It's probable that Eleanor has a bad character and is twisting the truth, which is why Young Master Song doesn't fancy her!"
"Eleanor is from the countryside. She probably has never even seen such a fine piece of jewelry. How can she compare with Miss Vivian?"
Were these people plants hired by Henry and Isabella? Their tones of praise are so identical.
Isabella pretended to be modest and said, "Oh, you're all exaggerating. Vivian just wants to do her bit for charity. It's an idea I've instilled in her since she was a kid. We're well - off, but there are still so many people who can't even get enough to eat or wear. When we have the ability, we should help others as much as we can. Vivian has always kept that in mind."
People praised Vivian even more, and Isabella along with her.
The more Henry heard, the prouder he became. He glanced at me standing aside and couldn't help but puff himself up.
"Did you hear how others are talking about Vivian? Learn from her. Don't be so selfish! Vivian knows to donate her jewelry to charity. What about you? All you know is spending money!"
I shot him a cold laugh. "Dad, Vivian's necklace is from..."
Fearing the truth would come out, Vivian quickly stepped forward to interrupt us. "Dad, don't be angry. As long as Eleanor is happy, that's fine. You don't have to be so strict with her."
The onlookers were even more full of praise. "Miss Vivian has such a good temper."
"Indeed. Eleanor has a sullen face, yet Miss Vivian still stands up for her."
Vivian suppressed the smile in her eyes. She must be gloating that I could do nothing but watch as my mother's heirloom became her glory.
Before long, an hour passed, and the auction reached its final stage - the auction of the highlight, the 'Ocean’s Heart' necklace.
The host flattered her on purpose. "The 'Ocean’s Heart' necklace is donated free of charge by Miss Vivian. This necklace is valued at over 30 million pounds. Miss Vivian has made a huge contribution to charity, so our auction house has decided to award Miss Vivian an additional medal. "
Everyone was shocked. This charity auction house was quite a large-scale. Since its establishment ten years ago, it has only issued nine medals in total. Those who received the auction house's medal were undoubtedly outstanding figures in various industries and were highly respected.
And now that Vivian, at such a young age, had won the praise of the auction house, no one would dare to look down on her in the future!
The spotlight fell on Vivian. She couldn't help getting excited as she listened to the praises from the crowd.
The host held out the medal. "If no one has any objections, then I declare that this medal is to be presented to..."
"I object!"
Just as Vivian was about to reach out and take the medal, I stood up and interrupted the host.
Everyone instinctively looked over.
I stood up with a cold face and said word by word, "The owner of this 'Ocean’s Heart' necklace is my mother! Vivian, isn't it too shameless of you to use my mother's item to flaunt your glory!"
As soon as the words fell, the whole hall erupted in an uproar!
Vivian reacted quickly and spoke in a pitiful and restrained manner.
"Eleanor, what are you talking nonsense about? This necklace is clearly the token of love Dad gave to my mom. What does it have to do with your mother? If you want a necklace, I can give you another other one. Can you stop making a scene for now?"
Isabella also sighed helplessly. "Eleanor, I know you like this 'Ocean’s Heart', but it's been donated. We can't take it back. Be a good girl. There are so many jewels at home. Aren't they enough for you?"
Were they really trying to distort the truth and mislead others into thinking I was being unreasonable?
Sure enough, the surrounding chatter started.
"Eleanor has such a bad temper. If she takes a fancy to something from others, she tries to snatch it and even slurs Miss Vivian."
"I thought Isabella had really taken Eleanor's mother's heirloom. Turns out she's just being unreasonable."
Henry was fuming. "The whole family knew this was the token of love I gave to Isabella. Get down here right now!"
"A token of love?" I seemed to have heard a joke and casually retorted.
"Isabella, are you sure this is something Dad gave you?" I asked Isabella again.
Isabella pretended to be wronged and started crying softly. "Of course, it's mine. Eleanor, whatever you want, I will give it to you. They say it's hard to be a stepmother. I always think of you, so why are you still not satisfied…"
Even at this point, Isabella was still trying to disgust me and deliberately setting a trap for me.
"Enough!" Henry suddenly stood up, pointing at me furiously, trying to cover up his guilt with a roar.
"I'm ashamed of you even if you're not ashamed of yourself. This isn't a place for you to act wild. I'll let it go for Vivian's sake. Shut up right now!"
Vivian curled her lips in satisfaction, looking at me in a victorious manner as if she were being extremely magnanimous.
"Sister, why don't you go home first? Don't disrupt the auction, okay?"
"Heh…" My heart grew colder. What an unrepentant family. I gave you all a chance. Now, it's time to show you the evidence.
I quickly stepped onto the stage, snatched the necklace, and placed it under the projector, then shouted.
"The necklace was ordered by my mother from Beaumont Jewelry thirty years ago. It's one-of-a-kind!"
"On the platinum diamond setting at the bottom of the necklace, the name 'Genevieve' is engraved. Isabella, you keep claiming this is yours. Then tell me, why is my mother's name engraved on your thing? Could it be that Isabella used to have a different name?!"
Everyone's eyes widened in shock.
What? There was a name engraved on the necklace?!
Vivian's head spun, and she clenched her fists tightly.
Isabella's face turned deathly pale. Right in front of her eyes was the 'Genevieve' on the necklace shown on the big screen. She realized that things had gone horribly wrong. They had been too hasty and hadn't checked carefully.
"My goodness, there really is a name! I remember Henry's ex-wife was called Genevieve!"
"It seems Eleanor wasn't lying! Henry gave his ex-wife's necklace to his mistress as a token of love. What kind of move is that?"
Henry also didn't expect the name to be engraved on the necklace. The situation reversed in an instant, and he was so angry that he almost passed out. He stiffened his neck and said stubbornly.
"Even if it was left by your mother, it's still my thing. What's wrong with me giving it to Isabella? You... you unfilial daughter, what else can you do besides cause trouble!"
When others calmed down and thought about it, it seemed to make sense.
Genevieve was dead, and her belongings were left in her husband's house. Although it was morally unacceptable for Henry to give them to his second-wife, it wasn't the daughter's place to criticize.
I glanced at Vivian, who was crying softly, and suddenly narrowed my eyes.
So it's about pretending to be pitiful? I can do that too.
Tears suddenly welled up in my eyes:
"But I didn't even get my mother's inheritance. Why did Dad give it to someone else? For today's banquet, I didn't even have a decent piece of jewelry. But Vivian casually donates a necklace worth 30 million pounds."
