Chapter 5 Hinting at Something
A clueless Chloe obediently went out after Yasmin in the pair of high heels.
As the No. 1 aristocratic family with an age-old history in the country, the Dixon Family dominated the market in various industries, including real estate, household appliances, entertainment, and hotels. Chloe sensed layer upon layer of pressure just by standing at the door and looking at the family’s mansion—it covered a huge area like an ancient palace.
“Chin up, chest out, stomach in!” Yasmin ordered seriously. “Once we get in, smile both when you should talk and when you shouldn’t!”
“Yes, Ma’am!” answered Chloe with a plastic smile. I’m here to be a doll anyway, she thought to herself. In fact, this flirtatious and libidinous makeup was just what she had wished for. Old Master Dixon would better be frightened into having a heart attack on the spot, being hospitalized, and then voluntarily breaking off the engagement!
Chloe slowly entered the Dixon Residence after Yasmin. Once they were inside, they had to take a car to reach the main house.
Once they entered the main house, Yasmin no longer assumed her previously cold and elegant demeanor. Instead, she smiled enthusiastically and ingratiatingly like a brothel-keeper. “Hello, Old Master Dixon. It’s been a long time since we last met. How are you?” Indeed, she spoke in the most shamelessly ingratiating way possible.
On the other hand, Chloe was only responsible for behaving like a doll by wearing a sweet smile behind Yasmin. To her surprise, though, Ben Dixon stood up from the commanding main seat as soon as he saw them coming in. Then, ignoring the obsequious Yasmin, he went straight up to Chloe and grabbed her hand excitedly. “Are you Chloe? You’ve grown up and become increasingly pretty, you good girl. This is good. This is so good…”
Shocked, Chloe stared woodenly with glazed eyes at the excited old man in front of her; he looked at her as if he had found his long-lost darling granddaughter.
Yasmin felt humiliated upon being ignored. However, seeing that Ben was so fond of Chloe, she quickly turned around and shot Chloe a glance, signaling for her to say something instead of standing there foolishly.
On the other hand, Chloe—who had wanted to give Ben a scare—suddenly recalled the avuncular old man who loved her dearly from the depths of her mind when she saw the excited old man. As her heart melted, she smiled meekly. “Hi, Old Master Dixon. I’m Chloe.”
“Well, nice to meet you, Chloe. Come and have a seat,” Ben urged. As he spoke, he led Chloe by the hand and sat down on the sofa; anyone with a discerning eye could tell that he was even more fond of Chloe than he was of his own granddaughter.
When Chloe took her seat, she saw out of the corner of her eye that there were another two men present. One was a relatively old and refined man, whereas the other gave off a chilly feeling that was difficult to ignore at first glance. He seemed like a block of unmeltable millennium-old ice that froze anyone who got near him. The man’s frostiness and loftiness was written on every part of his face, including his big eyes, his bushy eyebrows, his aquiline nose, his tightly compressed lips, and the frosty and defined outlines of his face.
Chloe’s eyes flickered. That guy is probably Harry Dixon, whereas the refined middle-aged man must be Jefferey Dixon, Harry’s father.
“How time flies! I remember holding you in my arms when you were little, Chloe. You were just a little baby back then; it surprises me that you’ve grown up to become a young lady. Thomas is blessed to have a granddaughter like you,” Ben said with a sigh before his expression turned wistful, which must be due to him recalling Chloe’s deceased grandfather.
At the thought of her grandfather, Chloe also felt a pang of sadness. Her grandfather was one of the few relatives in the world who were sincere toward her.
“Old Master Dixon—” Seizing the opportunity, Yasmin prepared to cut in, only to be ignored by Ben right away. His eyes glittered with excitement as he looked at Chloe and asked, “By the way, Chloe—you’re in your senior year of college, aren’t you? Have you found a job yet? If not, why don’t you join the Dixon Group?”
Seeing that Yasmin was humiliated, Chloe felt an unspeakable joy, for she was suddenly filled with the pleasure of revenge.
Meanwhile, as Yasmin watched Chloe and Ben having a good time chatting with each other, she couldn’t reconcile herself to this; she didn’t know whether she should be happy or angry. They haven’t gotten down to business after talking for such a long time!
On the other hand, Chloe noticed the standoffish man out of the corner of her eye as she was chatting with Ben. At that moment, she sensed an unfriendly and intense gaze eyeing her up and down continuously. This gaze was from Harry; not only that, she also noticed that the look in his eyes kept changing until it seemingly turned into a look of disgust.
Chloe’s eyes swept past Harry with a slight turn of her head. When she saw how he stared coldly and disdainfully at her bare skin, her heart did a complete somersault; Yasmin said that Young Master Harry liked women who dressed provocatively, but this didn’t seem to be the case right now.
At the dining table, Yasmin—who was sitting next to Chloe—seemingly knocked over a glass of red wine by accident, spilling all of its contents onto Chloe’s sexy and tight-fitting dress. “Oh dear, look at what I’ve done with my hands. Are you okay, Chloe? Your dress is wet. What should we do?” She nervously tried to wipe the stain off Chloe’s dress with a tissue, but the harder she tried to wipe it, the larger the stain became!
“It’s okay, Miss Yasmin,” Chloe replied blandly.
“That won’t do—you’ll catch a cold if you continue dressing this way,” said Ben with a look of concern. “Harry, take Chloe upstairs to clean up and let her have a change of clothes.”
Chloe couldn’t help but sneer when she noticed the flicker in Yasmin’s eyes. What an actress, she thought to herself.
She then turned to look at Harry, who frowned slightly to express his displeasure. Still, he stood up and directly grabbed her wrist while she didn’t notice, forcibly dragging her to her feet. “Let’s go.” His chilly voice had an ice-like and distant quality to it as his ice-cold and large hand clasped her slim wrist firmly at this moment, dragging her away against her will.
Chloe’s wrist was very painful, for Harry used a great deal of strength without showing compassion and care for her; one could tell that he spurned this loveless marriage. After being dragged stumbling into a room on the second floor, she was swung inside forcefully. Before she could steady herself, she was dragged yet again and thrown against the wall by a great force. Then, she was overpowered.
Her wrists were pinned against the wall by Harry’s firm grip; as his tall body pressed against her dainty body, he lowered his head and stared at the look of surprise in her eyes with his sharp eyes.
Sh*t, I’ve often been thrown against the wall lately! Chloe thought to herself. “Mr. Dixon, don’t you think such a position is inappropriate even though we’re an unmarried couple in name only?” she asked while suppressing the panic within her. Right now, she had no idea what Harry would do; she only had a very bad feeling, which was a feeling of aversion that surged up within her.
“Inappropriate? Aren’t you hinting at something by showing up in front of your fiancé in such clothing?” Harry was so frosty that even the words he spoke were cold.
He must perceive me as the kind of dissipated woman who loves spending time in nightclubs, Chloe thought to herself. Flashing a flirty and coquettish smile, she suddenly raised her head and moved her beautiful face forward while Harry was unprepared. Then, she stopped when the tip of her nose touched his; the suggestive distance and amorous air between them made the bewitching smile on her face look mesmerizing, sl*tty, and nonchalant.
