Chapter 5 The Ruthless Physician
Sebastian had been in a car accident the night before, and now an entire night had passed. He was filled with worry about his mother, Helen Tanner, who was still in the hospital.
My phone is broken, and Bethany must be losing her mind trying to reach me.
Sebastian, overwhelmed with anxiety, dashed toward the ward where Helen was staying.
"Wait, miracle doctor!" Henry and Alan called after him, hurrying to catch up. Evelyn, still in shock, followed closely behind.
In no time, Sebastian reached Helen’s ward, only to find her bed occupied by another patient. Helen and Bethany were nowhere to be seen.
"What’s going on? Where is the patient who was here?" Sebastian asked urgently.
"Oh, you mean that old woman? She couldn’t pay her medical bills, so they dumped her in the hallway," a family member of another patient replied casually.
"What?" Sebastian felt anger boiling inside him. Without another word, he rushed out of the room to search the hallway.
Soon, he found Helen lying on a cart in a corner of the hallway. Two nurses stood beside her, preparing to cover her with a white sheet.
"Take her away and notify the family and the funeral home," said Malcolm Hume, Helen’s attending physician. His cold demeanor suggested he was used to such scenes.
"Stop!" Sebastian shouted. "What are you doing?"
"You must be her son," Malcolm said, recognizing him immediately.
"Your mother has already passed away. You didn’t pay the outstanding medical fees, so when her condition worsened last night, we didn’t perform any resuscitation. If I had operated, she could have survived," Malcolm said with indifference, his hands in his pockets.
"You deliberately let her die because of unpaid bills?" Sebastian’s voice trembled with fury.
"Hospitals aren’t charities. How do you expect treatment without money?" Malcolm sneered.
"You could’ve at least given us time to raise the funds!"
"We informed your family last night. If you didn’t have the money, we couldn’t wait around for you," Malcolm said impatiently, waving his hand dismissively.
"Take her away!"
"Wait!" Sebastian exclaimed, suddenly noticing that Helen wasn’t actually dead. Though her breathing was faint, she was in a state of suspended animation.
Thank goodness I made it in time.
Helen’s condition, heart failure caused by severe cerebral thrombosis, was not particularly challenging for someone trained in celestial medicine. But time was critical. Sebastian decided to use the mysterious energy within him to completely heal her.
Placing his hand on her head, he channeled streams of life-filled energy into her body. First, he cleared the blood clot, then repaired her failing organs.
His own body had been healed from catastrophic injuries by this same energy. Healing Helen would be no different.
The bystanders in the hallway observed Sebastian’s actions with pity, shaking their heads.
"This poor young man must be out of his mind from grief."
"Hey, the dead can’t come back to life. Don’t torment yourself," someone said gently.
"What are you doing? Performing some kind of ritual?" Malcolm mocked. "Your mother is gone. Don’t you understand?"
But then, Malcolm’s expression froze. Helen’s chest began to rise and fall faintly, signaling the return of her breathing.
Sebastian quickly pulled out his acupuncture needles and expertly inserted them into key points on Helen’s head, chest, and lower back. In a matter of moments, she opened her eyes.
"Sebastian!" she called out, sitting up and jumping off the cart.
The crowd in the hallway erupted in gasps.
"Didn’t the doctor say she was dead? How is she alive?"
"Maybe she wasn’t actually dead."
"They were about to send her to the morgue when she was still alive. What kind of doctors are these?"
"Mom, let’s go." Sebastian could feel the mysterious life force within him grow slightly stronger. Ignoring the murmurs around him, he grabbed Helen’s hand and prepared to leave.
"Hold on!" Malcolm said coldly.
Sebastian’s actions and the crowd’s whispers had left him deeply irritated.
"You can’t leave without paying the outstanding medical fees."
"I saved my mom’s life. Why should I pay you?"
"You saved her? It was our treatment that worked. Stop talking nonsense. If you’re trying to avoid payment, I’ll call the police and have you arrested," Malcolm retorted with a smirk.
"Doctor, please, just tell us how much we owe. We’ll pay," Helen said, pulling on Sebastian’s sleeve anxiously.
"Here’s the bill. Pay it immediately," Malcolm said, slamming a stack of paperwork onto the cart.
Sebastian picked up the bill and was instantly enraged.
"My mom has only been here for a week, and you’re charging 27,000 dollars? Are you robbing us?"
Helen froze in shock at the figure.
"The ICU fees, medications, and equipment costs added up over the past few days. That’s the price," Malcolm said, rolling his eyes.
Looking more closely at the bill, Sebastian’s fury intensified.
"My mom had a cerebral thrombosis, yet you gave her targeted cancer drugs. And how could the ventilator usage on this bill exceed 48 hours per day?"
"This is fraud!" he shouted, throwing the bill at Malcolm.
"Oh, so you’re refusing to pay? Security, get in here and arrest them!" Malcolm shouted with confidence.
At that moment…
"Why is there such a commotion here?"
Henry and Alan appeared at the end of the hallway. They had been chasing after the miracle doctor but lost sight of him.
Malcolm turned to Henry and immediately began complaining. "Dr. Henry, these people are trying to avoid paying their fees. I’m calling security now!"
Henry frowned, uninterested in dealing with the situation. He was about to leave when…
"Wait, isn’t that the miracle doctor?" Alan exclaimed, spotting Sebastian in the crowd.
Alan rushed forward and grabbed Sebastian’s hand. "Finally, we found you, miracle doctor!"
Malcolm’s face darkened as he watched Alan joyfully take Sebastian’s hand.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here?" Malcolm barked angrily.
