Chapter 2 The Wealthiest Man
The vehicle before Jared was a black Maybach MPV, and even though he knew little about cars and their specific models, he could still tell it was an expensive, luxury car.
Furthermore, the fact that both father and daughter were clad in exquisitely tailored designer attire made it evident that they weren't ordinary people.
William continued to maintain a distance as he stared at Jared.
His daughter, Josephine Sullivan, however, wasn't as wary as him. “Can you fix cars?”
Jared nodded. “Yes, but I need tools.”
“I have them right here!” Josephine said excitedly before picking up the toolbox, planning to hand it to the man.
Alas, her father suddenly stopped her. “There's no need for that, Josephine. Let's not trouble him. I've already called someone for help, and they should be picking us up soon.”
Just as an anxious Josephine was about to retort, William interrupted, exclaiming, “That's enough. Do as I say!”
With that, he turned his attention back to Jared. “Sir, if you don't mind, you can sit and wait with us.”
Jared merely shrugged and said nothing.
He could tell William was wary of him, but then again, that was normal.
After all, Horington Prison wasn't far away, and it was clear from Jared's get-up that he had just been released. How, then, could anyone not be on guard around him?
With that, Jared set his bag down and found himself a nice spot on the ground.
At the same time, William dragged Josephine back into the car before stepping out with a bottle of water for Jared.
“Thank you!” the latter said as he accepted the drink. It was also then that he noticed Josephine was now staring at him with caution and a hint of disgust. Ha... Judging by the looks of it, her father must have shared his speculation about me with her.
After sipping his water, Jared turned to William and broke the ice. “Your health hasn't been good recently, has it?”
Needless to say, William was stunned. He had no idea why Jared would suddenly ask him that.
Josephine, who was far more straightforward, exclaimed, “How did you know that?”
“I'm a doctor.”
“Bullsh*t!” the woman answered.
When Josephine found out Jared was a former inmate from Horington Prison, she had been wondering what he did for a living. Was he a thief, a robber, or a homeless man?
In any case, a doctor was out of the question. There was no way he could have a respectable profession.
Instead of explaining himself, Jared stared solemnly at William. “Would you like me to give you a quick examination? Your illness might act up at any time, and once that happens, it'd be too late.”
William frowned and shook his head. He wasn't surprised that Jared could tell he was sick. After all, he was also aware that he hadn't been feeling well the past few days, and he looked nothing like a healthy person.
Besides, he, too, had the same concerns as Josephine. Even if Jared knew a thing or two about medicine, he didn't think the young man could do anything for his condition.
Upon seeing the situation, Jared no longer insisted and gazed silently into the distance.
The truth, as it turned out, was that he wasn't a doctor. He had never gotten a medical license, so in the eyes of the law, he wasn't a registered physician.
It might sound unbelievable, but he had learned everything about medicine in prison.
Three years ago, Jared was an ordinary man with zero skills and abilities.
However, it wasn't long before he became acquainted with an elderly man in prison, whom everyone called Draco.
To put it simply, Draco was a peculiar person. He was always rambling on about how he was the overlord of Dragon Sect and that he was proficient in magecraft and medical skills. He claimed to be so knowledgeable that he could even resurrect the dead!
Everyone treated Draco like a lunatic and ignored him, and only Jared would chat with him whenever he was free and even shared some of his food.
As a result, Draco would tell Jared some of the wildest and weirdest stories every day, from Dragon Sect to Dragon Island, all of which the latter had never heard before.
Over time, Draco would invite Jared to meditate and practice martial arts with him, to which the young man happily obliged out of sheer boredom.
After three years, however, Jared amazingly mastered numerous abilities and medical skills under Draco's guidance.
At the thought of that, Jared instinctively caressed a bronze ring on his finger.
The ring bore a lifelike dragon carving with the word “Dragon” on the dragon's head.
It was a gift from Draco when he was released from prison, and Jared had been wearing it since as a keepsake.
When Draco handed the ring to Jared, he also instructed the latter to head to Eastern Sea's Nameless Island on July 15, no matter what. As long as Jared showed the ring on the island, someone would pick him up, and he'd be given the opportunity of a lifetime.
Naturally, Jared noted down the instructions and fully intended to check out the island when the day arrived.
As the three of them continued to wait for William's rescue team, the eagle-eyed Jared soon spotted a line of black cars speeding toward them.
“Sir, your rescue team is here!” Jared shouted while pointing into the distance.
William followed the direction of Jared's finger, but his gaze quickly darkened, and he turned to Josephine in terror. “Get inside the car and hide!”
With that, he opened the door and shoved Josephine into the car before joining her. Within seconds, all the windows and doors were closed and locked.
Not knowing what William was up to, Jared watched on in shock.
Soon, the convoy pulled up and surrounded Jared and William's Maybach.
The next second, a dozen burly men with steel pipes stepped out of the cars.
“Mr. Sullivan's car has broken down, huh? No wonder we were kept waiting for so long! You're the richest man in Horington, Mr. Sullivan... Couldn't you have gotten a better car?” the leader scoffed as he ignored Jared and walked up to scrutinize the Maybach.
Jared was astonished, but not because the men before him were gangsters. Instead, he was shocked that the middle-aged man he had been talking to was none other than William Sullivan, the wealthiest man in Horington!
