Chapter 4 Superhero
“How is that possible?” the crowd shouted, not quite believing what they had just witnessed.
How could anyone's arm be tougher than a steel pipe?
“Nothing is impossible,” Jared said calmly as he pulled his arm out of the badly bent steel pipe.
When he tossed the pipe away, causing it to clang to the ground, it further proved to everyone that the weapon was real and not some fake, inferior product.
The gangsters took a step back as they stared nervously at Jared.
Who the heck are we dealing with? A monster? A superhero? Or an alien?
Even though William and Josephine were also a little apprehensive, their eyes now shone with a bright, beautiful glimmer of hope.
“Young man, I stand by what I said earlier! I'm willing to give you my entire fortune if you save us!” William shouted.
“Shut up!” the leader of the gangsters hollered, his face twisted in anger.
After slamming his pipe onto the ground, he pulled out a gun and aimed it at Jared. “I don't care who you are, punk, but none of this is your business. You can still leave if you want to!”
Upon seeing the gun, Jared felt a jolt of fear.
Although he did pick up some superpowers under Draco's guidance and could make parts of his body tougher than steel, he couldn't guarantee that it'd be enough to stop bullets.
After all, it was impossible to get his hands on a gun in prison, so he had never tested them out.
Then again, even if he couldn't be faster than a bullet, he knew he just had to be faster than the shooter.
The next second, Jared disappeared in a flash and suddenly appeared beside the leader. Without further ado, he grabbed the gun and effortlessly wrestled it from the latter's grasp.
“You!” the leader shouted, utterly scared out of his wits. Alas, just as he was about to make a run for it, Jared broke his knee with one kick, sending him crumpling to the ground and crying in pain.
“M-Monster!”
“Run!”
Having witnessed Jared's strength, the other gangsters lost all courage to fight him and quickly dropped their pipes before fleeing in panic.
Fortunately for them, Jared didn't bother to give chase. He had just gotten out of prison, and he didn't want to kill anyone.
“Young man, can you give me the gun?” William asked respectfully as he approached Jared.
Since it didn't matter to him, Jared obliged and tossed the gun to the older man.
A hint of nostalgia flashed across William's eyes as he caught the gun. After taking a deep breath, he brought the weapon up and began shooting at the fleeing gangsters without hesitation.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gunshots rang out one after another, and before long, all of the gangsters dropped dead, each with a bullet to their head.
This time, it was Jared's turn to be shocked as he looked at William. Who knew the wealthiest man in Horington was also a sharpshooter?
Knowing the leader of the gangsters was merely feigning death, William shot him dead and finally regained his composure. “I served in the Marine Corps when I was young.”
Jared nodded, indicating that he understood.
Just then, Josephine cried out. “Dad! What's wrong?”
Jared quickly turned around, only to see an ashen-faced William coughing up blood and losing consciousness.
As it turned out, after William had killed the gangsters and calmed himself down, the illness he had kept suppressed the entire time finally acted up.
Later, in Horington Hospital, William gradually regained consciousness. “What happened to me?”
“Dad, you're finally awake! Looks like that guy didn't lie to me!” Josephine, who had been keeping watch beside her father's bed, exclaimed in delight.
“That guy?” William muttered dazedly before snapping back to his senses. “Are we safe now? Where's Mr. Chance?”
“Back then, your heart had almost stopped, but that guy pulled a needle from somewhere, stuck it on various spots on your body, and assured me that you'd be safe for the time being. After that, he fixed our car, and I sent you to the hospital...”
“So, he has saved me again, huh?” William said wistfully as he looked at the tiny punctures along his arm.
Josephine, on the other hand, still felt a little unsure about the whole situation. It was just too farfetched to think that a few needle punctures on the body could save one's life.
“By the way, you haven't told me where Mr. Chance is. He's our savior, and we should thank him properly!”
“He alighted midway and said he was heading home,” Josephine answered, albeit a little sheepishly. “I was in a hurry to get you to the hospital, so...”
William sighed. “In that case, do you know where he lives?”
“I don't...” Josephine replied as she lowered her head.
“What about his contact information?”
“I forgot to ask him for it...”
For a moment, William was speechless. That said, he knew his daughter wasn't to blame, either. After all, she was dealing with an emergency.
Just then, Josephine suddenly lifted her gaze and piped up, “Oh! But he did say he'd return to give you another treatment. I informed him that we're staying at Glamor Hotel.”
“Great! I shall patiently wait for him at the hotel entrance, then!” William replied excitedly.
