Chapter 1 A Silly Human
Tatiana
"She's just a weak human, someone else to worry about and who can't protect herself,"
"She's just someone else to take care of," I heard them say.
"Just look at her!"
And that had been my whole life. I was just a human among werewolves, the one who especially hated by everyone.
A woman from the Midnight pack, named Lucia, found me in the forest crying. I was just a little girl... and she took pity on me, she didn't want to leave me alone to die. I was too young to remember anything. Only one thing defined me: I wasn't like them.
"She must behave well and help the pack in any way she can, then she can stay in this pack." said Mauricio, the alpha of the pack.
After that, Lucia took care of me, she was a strong woman and didn't let anything hurt me.
Werewolves have a very clear structure in their pack, where at the top was the alpha and his family, and below them, the omegas. And below them... me. I helped the omegas with chores, and I dedicated myself to serving the pack. Lucia did what she could to help me... but the alpha forbidden that.
After years of peace with Lucia who cared for me, when I was about to enter adolescence, she suddenly died in an attack on our territory. And from then on, everything changed.
Years of mistreatment and abuse followed. When I passed by, they pushed me and called me names. They took away my things and moved me to a small room far away. I was now a slave.
I lived in a small room, and over time I began to notice it: the looks, the laughter when I passed by, and the comments.
"It's easy to see she's a human... I mean, just look at her!" they said out loud and mocked me.
"She's small and doesn't have a strong muscle!" they said, laughing.
If something characterized werewolves, it was that they were very active and agile, from a young age they were trained and their bodies were athletic and in shape. In contrast, I... was not precisely.
I was about to enter adolescence, I saw that my body was starting to change. I was a chubby girl, but as I grew, I began to show curves and rounder shapes.
The others hid my clothes, stole my things, and I would return to my room to cry in secret. I was at the lowest social scale, and I would never improve. Because... how could I behave being human?
One day I was cleaning the main house and several boys approached to laugh at me.
"If enemies attack us someday, she will be the first to fall," some girls at my age said. They were slender, with long legs and toned stomachs. I had no friends, and no one spoke to me.
"Just imagine the chubby girl running and being caught by the rouges!" another boy said and they laughed. The rouges were wild werewolves, without a pack and very violent.
"They're going to have a feast when they go to eat her!" others commented and laughed.
- Tell us... can't you go on a diet? Can't you do something with that very human body you have? - said another, pushing me and making me fall while they laughed. Then they took everything I had cleaned and threw garbage on the floor and furniture.
- Here... you know... so you can get some exercise... and lose a few pounds - one said, laughing again before leaving.
- Poor chubby girl... she will never have a mate, who could be unlucky enough to be her partner? -
- Humans don't have mate... she has to rely on her charm and enchant some poor fool - they said from afar, still laughing at me.
In this world, strength and having your wolf were important, and I would never have any of that. I also didn't desire to be slim like them. Actually... what I wanted the most... what hurt me the most was that I wouldn't have a mate, a companion destined by the moon goddess. A lifelong partner.
Relationships between werewolves and humans were very complicated and uncommon, when I heard the stories of werewolves finding their mates... I imagined what it would be like to have a mate, an unconditional companion who loved me as I am.
That was my life for a while, until, years later, I found a little joy. Some families would leave their children with me, seeing me as a nanny without pay, and when a couple died, they left me in charge of two orphans: Marina and Henry.
I loved taking care of them and spoiling them, and I felt... like we were some kind of family.
- I could take care of them... forever, they could live with me - I offered to take care of them full-time.
- I guess you have to be good for something - that's what the alpha said. And they stayed with me.
We were given a small house near the forest where the three of us lived. I was sixteen years old.I was happy because they were lively and intelligent children, and I read them stories and took care of them, always attentive as if they were my little siblings.
- Will you have your wolf too, Tati? - Henry would ask me, and I would smile sadly.
- No, little one, but you two will surely be very strong wolves -
- Sebastian told us we were going to be warriors - Marina said happily as I prepared the food.
- Strong warriors to protect everyone! - Henry said happily, jumping near me.
